Preview: Gallery Crawl In The Cultural District

Need an excuse to stick around downtown after work on a Friday? Look no further than the next Gallery Crawl on April 27th from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the Cultural District.
What exactly is the Gallery Crawl?
Darcy Kucenic, Manager of Education and Operations for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, gave some insight into this month's event.
"We do one gallery crawl each season, with usually over twenty gallery 'stops' during each crawl that participants can walk to," Kucenic said. "This crawl will be even bigger with 28 stops, and all of the art is different for each event we organize."
"There's no specific route we suggest, but we do post a map of the crawl on our website that can be downloaded. Maps will also be available at each stop throughout the district."
Kucenic said that each event has a few thousand participants and even the previous Gallery Crawl on January 27th had a high turnout due to the unseasonably warm winter temperatures.
This crawl will take place during the opening night one of Pittsburgh's Dutch Festival events, so this crawl will feature the performing and visual arts that play a substantial role in the Dutch Festival. The Wood Street, Space and 707 and 709 galleries will be the main locations of the Dutch Festival events. Check them out during the crawl.

After checking out the visual and performing arts offerings of the Dutch Festival at the aforementioned galleries, head over to Katz Plaza at 7th Street and Penn Avenue, where live music by The Color Fleet will be performing throughout the night.

This curated event features art and music by K-12 students who attend Pittsburgh public schools. According to Kucenic, the art and music is created and practiced during the students' art and music classes throughout the school day, and then submitted to the curator for acceptance into the showcase. This is the first time the showcase will be at an official gallery instead of one of the public schools around the city. Ensure this gallery serves as one of the stops on your crawl, as the Gallery Crawl coincides with the closing reception for this student-created show.

If you're not ready to call it a night after the event wraps up at 9 p.m., stick around for the world premiere of "The News" by JacobTV at the Byham Theater. As an inclusion of the Dutch Festival, Jacob TV's event is a mixed-media performance art opera featuring spoken word, music and video.
