Pretty people drive shiny cars that go real fast and crash. That was the only sentence I wanted to have in this review of Fast & Furious 6. I wanted you to open the webpage and only see that. Corporate didn’t like the idea and the truth is I would be disrespecting the franchise that has reinvented itself and made car loads of cash along the way. Instead of racing and drifting, the F & F franchise has turned into B-Movie heist films with spectacular crashes and beautiful people driving the fast rides. This week the motor-head family lead by Vin Diesel’s Toretto and Paul Walker’s Brian try to take down an international terrorist in order to gain immunity from their past crimes in Fast & Furious 6.

Fast & Furious 6 has our clan of racers living the dream and leaving their lives of crime in the rear view mirror after the heist in Brazil. That is until Agent Hobbs(Dwayne Johnson) approaches them with an offer. Help Hobbs and company hunt down Owen Shaw(Luke Evans) and they will be given their freedom. If that wasn’t tempting enough, Toretto also finds out that his deceased lover Letty(Michelle Rodriguez) is back from the dead and helping the criminal organization. The gang teams with Hobbs to take down Shaw and his criminal network.

Resurrections and criminal masterminds that specialize in vehicular warfare? Sounds dumb and you would be right. But it’s also a whole lot of dumb fun as well. Fast & Furious 6 never tries to be Shakespeare. After six movies the filmmakers know what they are and play right into it. The car chases are top-notch including the chase between Toretto’s crew and Shaw’s metal formula one style race car that looks like it drove off the set of Mad Max. There are also tanks and airplanes that get involved in the action in Fast & Furious 6. The script is bad, but the action is strong which is exactly what you would expect from a F & F film. I doubt anybody is showing up to hear the riveting dialogue between Walker and Diesel.

Fast & Furious 6 is ridiculous at times, but you can’t deny the franchise’s popcorn charm. The film leaves you entertained even if the plot is weak as a Ford Festiva racing against Dom’s Dodge Charger. I’m not a huge fan of this franchise and I never understood why they made a part 2 in the first place. But I did find myself letting go and enjoying the big mindless action of Fast & Furious 6. Actors like the Dwayne Johnson have helped breathe new life into the franchise and for the first time I’m actually intrigued by the next installment on the way. Make sure you stick around until the end for the tease. Overall I give Fast & Furious 6 2 1/2 potatoes out of 4, but I do expect fans of the franchise to have an even higher opinion than mine.

But she also received a little help from Marilyn Manson.

Lavigne told MTV that Manson helped bring her out her naughty side on the song “Bad Girl, ” which will be on her untitled album, due out this September. At the last minute while recording the track Lavigne texted Manson, who she’s known since she was 18 years old, and just asked if he’d be willing to come by.

“He’s like, ‘I’ll come over and I’ll hear it,’” she explained. “So he came at 4 o’clock in the morning… Yes, it was one of those nights.”

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST — (9:00–10:00 p.m. ET)
“Pilot” (TV-PG, V) (HDTV)
A RE-IMAGINING OF THE CLASSIC TALE — When she was a teenager, Catherine “Cat” Chandler (Kristin Kreuk, “Smallville”) witnessed the murder of her mother. Cat would have been killed too, but someone – or something – saved her. Now, years have passed and Cat is a police officer, investigating a case that leads her to the person who saved her: a doctor named Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan, “Terra Nova”).

With the help of his childhood friend J.T. Forbes (Austin Basis, “Life Unexpected”), Vincent has been in hiding, guarding his secret — when enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super strength. Still, Cat is touched by the person that lives within the Beast and she knows she has to keep her relationship with Vincent a secret from her boss, Joe Bishop (Brian White, “The Shield”), her partner, Tess Vargas (Nina Lisandrello, “Nurse Jackie”), and even from her close friend, Evan Marks (Max Brown, “The Tudors”), the medical examiner. Cat and Vincent are powerfully drawn to one another, but they understand that their connection is extremely dangerous for both of them. Gary Fleder directed the episode written by Sherri Cooper & Jennifer Levin (#100).

“Growing Pains” (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)
ELENA’S WORST NIGHTMARE — Elena (Nina Dobrev) awakens on the morning after the accident to find the thing she dreaded most has come true – she died with vampire blood in her system and now must go through the terrible transition to become a vampire…or face certain death. Stefan (Paul Wesley) promises Elena that he and Bonnie (Kat Graham) will exhaust every possible way out of the situation, but Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is furious with his brother for letting Elena die in the first place. Bonnie pays a terrible price for her attempt to change Elena’s fate, while Damon takes out his frustration and rage on Matt (Zach Roerig). In a rare moment of empathy, Rebekah (guest star Claire Holt) is deeply touched by Stefan and Elena’s devotion to one another.

Finally, Pastor Young (guest star Michael Reilly Burke) and the Town Council members begin rounding up the vampires and their supporters, leading to an unexpected tragedy. Steven R. McQueen, Candice Accola, Michael Trevino and Joseph Morgan also star. Chris Grismer directed the episode written by Caroline Dries (#401).

Tornado Safety Tips
Prepare for the continuing tornado season.

Know the difference between a tornado watch and a warning. A watch means that the conditions are favorable for a tornado to develop and that you should be alert. A warning means that a tornado has been spotted and that you should take shelter immediately.

Download the Red Cross Tornado Warning App for alerts on upcoming tornadoes and storms. This application will give you step-by-step instructions on how to prepare for a tornado, what to do when the tornado hits, and has a siren that will go off in case of an emergency.

Have plenty of emergency supplies including water, food, medicine, flashlights (and batteries), a full tank of gas, and important documents.

If time permits you should move all lawn furniture and trash cans away.

If you are in a mobile home you should find a prearranged shelter. Since your mobile home is not built into the ground, it can be picked up and airborne in no time.

If you are unable to flee before the tornado hits you should take shelter indoors in a basement or interior hallway or room – you must avoid windows.

I’ll be the first to admit I hate sequels. I really hate when filmmakers decide to make trilogies. They’re always watered down attempts at recreating the success, thrill and excitement of the first installment – most, in my eyes, usually fail miserably. Do we remember Free Willy 2 and 3? Exactly, you shouldn’t.

So, needless to say, you can guess how I felt about walking in to the theater to catch the sixth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise – it was anything but complimentary. That was until I sat back, buckled myself in and felt the throttle of adrenaline pulse through me like I was behind the wheel of a twin-turbo V8 BMW 5 series, ripping through the streets of downtown London.

Director Justin Lin returns to the helm to direct “Furious 6”, the name that flanks the big screen when the film opens. The movie opens with international criminal, notorious bad a** and street racer Dom Toretto, played by the intimidating Vin Diesel, his girlfriend Elena (Elsa Pataky), Dom’s sister Mia (Jordana Brewster) and Mia’s husband, former good-cop-gone-bad, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) living the good life in the Canary Islands, relishing in the riches of their last big Brazilian bank job from “Fast Five” and avoiding extradition from worldwide agencies.

The first heart-racing car scene isn’t buried in the plot and happens right away, changing the minds of anyone who might have gotten up to grab popcorn during the opening credits. O’Conner is behind the wheel of a stunningly sleek, nas-tuned Nissan Skyline GTR while Toretto goes American vintage-muscle-turned-modern in a rebirthed onyx black Dodge Charger SRT – both vehicles pump out enough ponies to take on the likes of NASCAR. O’Conner and Toretto race along a narrow, two-lane road literally on the side of an enormous cliff – the Skyline overtakes the Charger, then pulls back to on-coming traffic only to shift down again to propel past the American muscled Charger. Quick switchbacks, one-lane underpasses and missing guard rails add to the already intense, mind boggling speed these two former nemeses are laying down. They whip their two-ton steeds into a small parking lot where three nuns await them – it’s a hospital and we quickly learn O’Conner’s wife, Mia, is in labor with their first child, Jack. Whoever said an ambulance was the quickest way to a hospital surely hasn’t met this team of daredevils.

Fortunately, for the sake of the plot and having any movie at all, their bliss comes to an abrupt end when federal agent Luke Hobbs, played by the contemporary Herculean hero, Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson, shows up with an offer that Toretto and O’Conner can’t refuse. Hobbs has been on a worldwide manhunt for Toretto and his family of high-stakes thieves ever since “Fast Five” – now, he needs their help in taking down international outlaw Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), whose own team of highly skilled gangsters have stolen components to a device that threatens all of humanity. The fact that one of Shaw’s henchmen appears to be Toretto’s old girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) – a character thought to have been killed two movies ago in “Fast & Furious” – compels Toretto and his gang out of retirement to rescue her. Hobbs promises the team federal pardons and immunities in exchange for their help in eliminating the elusive Shaw.

Nabbing Shaw means Toretto and O’Conner must put the old band back together, so Tej (Ludacris), Han (Sung Kang), Gisele (Gal Gadot) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) are all called in from their respective exiles to pitch in for one last heist. One of the film’s more comedic characters, Roman, constantly cracks jokes and delivers some pretty good one-liners that keep the audience swinging on a metaphorical pendulum from the-edge-of-your-seat intensity to doubled-over-laughter – for a sixth installment of a car franchise, writer Chris Morgan surely did a heck of a job.

I am huge car fan, an avid Motortrend or CAR & DRIVER reader, and found that Furious 6 100% satisfied my thirst for rubber screeching fury – I didn’t want more and I didn’t want any less. I found the film to be nearly perfectly balanced between the inevitable Hollywood love interest, street races, comedic relief, tough-as-nails muscle and elusive lifestyle of an international crime firm – at times, I rooted for the bad guy. At others, I thought he should be shot point blank by Hobbs’ rifle. That, to me, is great writing – when a screenwriter can take your emotions and place them where he wants them to be. It was definitely an unexpected feeling.

There’s a lot of running around regarding the alleged McGuffin device that Shaw and his team want to consolidate so he can execute his plan of destruction. But, as true F & F fans know and have come to expect, that’s not what Lin’s latest film is really about. It’s really about driving exceedingly fast through Picadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square in downtown London, zipping along Spanish expressways while being shot at by a tank manned by Shaw and his team, and pulling off insane jumps, leaps and bounds that are so unbelievable at times (like when Vin Diesel jumps across a bridge gap to meet tank-tossed Letty mid-air and propel them both back to the other side of the bridge to safety), it makes the audience “LOL” out of sheer inability to believe it could ever happen.

But, regardless of how unbelievable some of the action shots are, Lin and his team of editors, cinematographers and producers do an excellent job, in my opinion, of staging the ever-escalating action sequences that culminate in a mouth-open-hands-clenched-to-your-arm-rests finale involving Range Rovers, Alfa Romeos, Mercedes-Benzes and other four-wheeled speedsters in and around a cargo plane that’s trying to take off with Shaw inside. This scene goes on forever, which is truly my only critique of the film as the runway would have had to have been 100 miles long in order for this scene to be anywhere near realistic.

Some of the better parts of the film were not at all tied to torque, speed or horsepower. Getting to see Hobbs’ female agent partner and Letty (who lost all memory of Toretto and now works for Shaw) go mano-a-mano on two different occasions made me yell out in support, a collective “OOOHHHH” from the audience when a good hit, punch or leg-drop was thrown. There’s just something so compelling and totally captivating about two female combatants taking it out on each other – the sound of body slams, arms crashing together and heads banging against a cement wall. Intense, yes; unnecessary, I say, “no way”.

When the sounds of heavy exhaust and the clash of 5th shifting to 6th die down, and people actually talk, the theme of family is constantly mentioned. Nonetheless, while Diesel and Walker, along with Gibson and Ludacris, have fairly limited abilities as actors, they thrive in Furious 6. And rightfully so; at six movies in, I think they’ve definitely established themselves and their co-stars as a cohesive unit capable of dragging out the huge success of the first F & F nearly a decade ago.

Through a well-developed storyline that was just simple enough to follow, a plethora of intense, action-packed car scenes and incredible chemistry and dynamic among the stars of the film, “Fast & Furious 6″ serves up a big plate of steaming entertainment. Lin and his crew never pretend it’s a gourmet meal atop one of Mount Washington’s elite eateries, but they’re more than happy to offer up a big fat sandwich with coleslaw, fries piled high and a touch of spicy dressing.

In 2009 The Hangover came out of nowhere to become the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time. It turned Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis into huge stars and set the stage for its inevitable followup. The Hangover II made a ton of money, but left some fans disappointed with the same unbelievable scenario being played out again on film with a different location. Fans may have soured on The Wolfpack, but the truth is if there’s money to be made on a franchise, studios will go back to the well as many times as they can. That’s why once again The WolfPack will assemble for a final crazy adventure in The Hangover III.

In The Hangover III, the traditional drunken black out bachelor party theme is ditched and the focus turns to man-child Allan (Galifianakis) in a full mental breakdown. This leads to an intervention with Stu, Phil and Doug. They decide to take Allan to get help but run into trouble with a gangster (John Goodman) who thinks they have information concerning Chow (Ken Jeong). Instead of a drunken mystery, The Hangover III turns into a heist film that can’t steal a laugh from the audience. The plot is thin and The Hangover III squanders the few interesting plot twist that are attempted. Also the risky comedy that was taken in the first two installments is scaled back tremendously. Except for an incident with a giraffe, the comedy is basically the group cursing at one another.

The actors themselves seem to just be going through the motions at this point as well. Ed Helms who was the focal point of the last film is basically regulated to the guy sitting in the back seat. Bradley Cooper seems bored and is slowly losing the snarky charm that we loved as Phil in the first two films. Galifianakis and Jeong provide some giggles, but for the most part it’s the same weird traits that the duo displayed in the first two Hangover movies. The script is poorly written and it seems that the actors where just as bored with it on-screen as I was sitting in my seat.

So, who should take the blame for the failure of The Hangover III? The answer may surprise you. The blame is on me and everyone one else who thought the old Hangover format wasn’t working and needed to be changed. I turned into a complete hypocrite after viewing The Hangover III because I wanted something different and when Todd Phillips gave it to me, I didn’t like it. The Hangover II‘s premise wasn’t bad, it just didn’t have the laughs of the original. Turning the story into a heist film just did not work for this cast of characters. Unfortunately what was missing was the big belly laughs that only came in the last five minutes of the The Hangover III. We get a glimpse of the The Hangover sequel that could have succeeded in the laughs department, but it was too little too late. Overall I give The Hangover III 2 out of 4 potatoes.

Hundreds of guests, contest winners and downtown shoppers gathered at the corner of 5th Avenue and Smithfield Street early Friday morning, May 17, 2013 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the iconic Kaufmann’s Clock that has served as a central meeting place for shoppers, sweethearts, friends and colleagues alike for over a century. Among artwork by Pittsburgh artist Linda Barnicott, guests came together to recollect on day trips to the Tic Toc Restaurant as children or compare stories of streetcar rides that dumped them off at the symbolic keeper of time. Pittsburgh CW’s Green Team caught all the action at “Meet Me Under the Clock Day” in downtown Pittsburgh.

The Kaufmann’s Clock weighs in at about 2,500 pounds and was designed by Coldwell Clock Company of New York City. It was incorporated into the Kaufmann’s building façade by Pittsburgh architectural firm, Janssen and Abbott, in 1913. That’s where the stories and memories begin.

Since its inception, the clock has served to represent more than just the time of day – to some, it was the place where they met a parent for a day of shopping and movies. For one woman, it was the place she told her Mother about her enrollment into the United States Navy. Still, for others, the clock was a secret rendezvous with their sweetheart where they met to fall in love and forget the tough times…the rest, as they say, is history.

As I made my way into the iconic storefront now owned by Macy’s department stores, guests from all walks of life mingled with one another sharing stories of their childhood – in some way, shape or form, all of them spoke of the clock in all of its bronze glory. Among the crowd were 10 contest winners who submitted stories and pictures centered around their fondest memories of the Kaufmann’s iconic timepiece.

“My mother used to give a note to the conductor of the number forty streetcar from Mount Washington telling him to let me off at the Kaufmann’s clock. I’d meet my father under the clock for a day at the movies,” said Beverly Kerr, 84, of McCandless Township. “I was just six years old at the time, all dressed up in my Easter clothes, you know, and then I’d get to my stop, the doors opened and there was my father – arms open, waiting for me.” Kerr smiled bright as she shared with me her most treasured childhood memories. She also pointed out that the fare to ride the streetcar into town back in the 1930’s was just eight cents – a hefty $2.42 less than today.

Michael Stypula shared with me the whirlwind romance between himself and his late wife, Irene. Stypula is now 88 years old but doesn’t forget just how meaningful and cherished the Kaufmann’s clock is for him.

“I was 22 at the time, [Irene] was 18 – I used to catch a streetcar into town, get off at the clock and catch a South Hills car to her house to pick her up. We’d then catch a streetcar back to town and get off at the clock for an evening together,” Stypula said. “Then one day she said to me ‘honey, why don’t you just stay at the Kaufmann’s clock and I’ll catch a streetcar and meet you there?’ I said, ‘okay, honey – Saturday at 8’, and that’s the way it was for us. We saved a lot of time, no hassle, and even a couple of streetcar checks.”

In his contest submission essay, Stypula wrote, “the one evening when we got off at Kaufmann’s, I took her by the hand and we stood under Kaufmann’s Clock and I gave her a big hug and kiss and said, ‘honey, do you remember?’ – ‘I sure do,’ she said. You know, all this happened over 60 years ago. I am now 88, but those lovely memories are with me. When you’re in love, you never forget.”

Hearing his story put life into perspective for me – how would I, or any of us, really, coordinate “meeting under the clock” today without a cell phone, Twitter or Facebook? Back then, for Kerr and Stypula, you made a promise to be there. And you were: a father waiting for his six-year-old daughter, a lover waiting for his muse. That’s just one of the many things I took away from speaking with these two wonderful people who opened their memory banks to enlighten my young mind.

Mr. Stypula took our last few minutes together to share a more humorous story with me about the clock that, in his words, “they wouldn’t publish”. While enlisted in the armed forces as an 18-year-old in 1943, Stypula said he remembers the day President Harry Truman ordered the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. He said his comrades criticized the president’s orders but he said to them, “I respect the heck out of that man for making that call.” Then, in a moment of comedic commentary, Stypula said, “I respect him so much I’d kiss his bare behind under the Kaufmann’s Clock until it drew a crowd! To this day, I still don’t know what made me say that but, I did.” Stypula’s spirit, humor and fortitude were evident in his storytelling; I was honored to meet and speak with him.

I made my way around the room to the celebrity guest of the day, Mr. McFeely from Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, there to read the Mayor’s proclamation designating May 17 and May 18, 2013, as “Meet Me Under the Clock Days” in Pittsburgh. As a Mr. Roger’s fan growing up, I was all but numb upon meeting McFeely in the flesh.

“I remember taking the streetcar to town to meet my grandpa under the clock. He bought me a film camera right here at this very store for Christmas one year,” McFeely told me. “The next year, he bought me a projector. I still have both; I think that’s what started my interest and career in television.”

McFeely said that his character’s slogan, “speedy delivery”, fit perfectly with the theme of time for the 100th Anniversary of the Kaufmann Clock.

“It’s a Pittsburgh tradition, [this city] loves their things,” he said. “They don’t like change.”

I snapped a few photos with Mr. McFeely and thanked him for all the work he’s done over his long career in children’s television – he thanked me, by name, for speaking with him, pointing to how humble, real and truly caring he is.

As guests mingled among tables of food, pastries and coffee, Senior V.P. and Regional Director of Stores Russell Schutte shared a few words with the crowd about this special day.

“The clock is an iconic part of Pittsburgh – we all have a connection to that clock,” said Schutte, who shared the stories of all 10 honored winners. “I get goose bumps just reading these stories to you, that’s how powerful they are.”

Schutte introduced 100-year-old, Elsie Henderson, who worked for the Kauffman family as their cook at their weekend residence, Fallingwater – the famous home designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the Laurel Highlands of Fayette County.

In our short conversation, Henderson told me, “anything to do with Kaufmann’s feels like home.” The Kaufmann’s chauffeur would drive Henderson from the city to the weekend retreat every Friday, after she checked with their city cook to make sure she never repeated a meal. Henderson worked at Fallingwater from 1947 until 1964 when the home was donated to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy as a historic landmark. Having the opportunity to shake hands and interact with Ms. Henderson was like traveling back in time, right into the memories of one of America’s most prominent families.

The morning concluded with Mr. McFeely’s proclamation outside under the clock at 10AM where passersby stopped to snap pictures and gaze at the frenzy gathered on the corner. I stood there in awe of what it meant to be a part of this celebration – I myself recall fond memories of the Kaufmann window displays at Christmas, as the snowflakes fell and the winter wind “nipped at my nose”. Hearing the stories of days gone by, when life just seemed so simple, carefree and relaxed, made me stop and appreciate all that is beautiful in life. The city of Pittsburgh may be “most livable” today but it’s evident that the veteran citizens of this town have been living it up for decades under the watchful eye of the Kaufmann Clock.

Lesson of the day: make a conscious effort to find time in your life – time for friendship, love, shopping, movies, marriage, family and tradition.

Get up, get out…and meet me under the clock.

By: Casey Shea

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Grammy Awards have come and gone this year, but you may not know that a rock band from right here in Pennsylvania took home some hardware.

Halestorm won this year’s Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Grammy for their song “Love Bites (So Do I),” off their second studio album “The Strange Case Of…”

The band is comprised of singer/guitarist Lzzy Hale, drummer Arejay Hale, guitarist Joe Hottinger and bassist Josh Smith.

On Friday, Halestorm blew the roof off of Stage AE. Before the show, I had the incredible honor of sitting down with Arejay and Lzzy to talk about their success.

Watch the entire interview here:

Being nominated came as a shock to the band, who were actually on stage when the news came down.

“We were in Madison, Wisc. and it was in the middle of our set. I just sat down at the piano to do one of our ballads and I’m kind of talking with the audience before I start. The guys had walked off stage and they got the text from our management through our tour manager,” Lzzy said. “My guitar player comes running over to me and tells me this and I’m like, ‘What the hell?’ and I’m yelling to everybody on stage. We all come out and hug it out and the entire front row was like, ‘What? What happened? Who died?’”

“I was behind the drums when Joe told Lzzy and I just hear her going, ‘What? Are you kidding me?’ And I’m thinking, ‘What disaster happened,’ you know? Then, she said, ‘We just got nominated for a Grammy,’ on the mic and the whole crowd was silent for three seconds then [went crazy],” Arejay said.

So, how unexpected was the win on the night of the Grammys for Halestorm? The band did not prepare anything ahead of time for a possible acceptance speech.

“I remember them saying, ‘The Grammy goes to,’ and then I think I blacked out after that because we all didn’t respond right away. They say ‘Love Bites (So Do I) by Halestorm,’ and we were all like, ‘Who is that? Oh my God, that’s us!’” Lzzy said. “We didn’t have anything prepared because we had all said, ‘Well, we’re definitely not going to win, look at our competition. Let’s just be lucky that we get to be here, let’s be happy.’”

“I pull out my phone, and I’m like, ‘Oh God, I hope I don’t forget anybody,’” Arejay said.

Lzzy and her younger brother, Arejay, have been performing together since 1997.

If you listen to their music or see them live, one thing that will strike you is Lzzy’s incredible vocal range. From ballads to rock anthems, she can do it all, but she credits help along the way.

“I started singing with Arejay when we were kids and just because I could, I didn’t really think about it too much. I didn’t really realize I could do everything that now I know I can do with it until I was 16 or 17,” Lzzy said.

Early on, they had the opportunity to open up for Kix. After the show, Lzzy approached front man Steve Whiteman seeking pointers on how to get better.

Whiteman offered to give her vocal lessons at Marty’s Music Shop in Harrisburg, where she went every week for almost two years. To this day, Lzzy still uses the same warm-up techniques and guidelines she learned with Whiteman.

One of the other things you’ll quickly notice during a live show is that the band thoroughly enjoys every second they are on stage. They bring a non-stop, in your face presence to the stage that is infectious.

“That’s the only time in this crazy life that we live where everything makes sense. We’re up on stage, we’re free from everything and we’re just having a blast,” Arejay said.

“Nobody can take anything away from you when you’re on stage. You can do whatever you want. You might get in trouble afterward, but you can do what you want,” Lzzy said.

While other bands may use backing tracks during their live show, Halestorm prides themselves on giving an authentic performance.

“What you see is what you get with us. We don’t play with any tracks or trickery or anything. So, it’s literally plug in and play. If you hear mistakes, that’s because we actually made them. Sometimes I forget lyrics, sometimes Arejay doesn’t come in right. It’s very unpredictable and I think it’s very fun for us that way and it keeps it extremely fresh,” Lzzy said.

If you’re a rock music fan, you’ve probably heard of the band Disturbed. Lead singer David Draiman has a new side project called Device and their first album came out in April. One of the tracks is a cover of Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Close My Eyes Forever,” which features Lzzy.

Draiman approached Lzzy about joining him on the track a couple of years ago.

“The dude is insanely talented and insanely smart and always there for advice. He said, ‘I have this great idea. Remember the Ozzy and Lita ‘Close My Eyes Forever?’ No one’s done that yet and I’d love to have you sing on something of mine if I can get something going,’” Lzzy said.

Well, a couple of years passed, but then Lzzy got the phone call from Draiman saying the project was on.

“It was a really special thing that happened with the two of us singing together and this doesn’t happen often. We were listening to it back and the two of us got goose bumps at the same time. Right before the bridge I’m like, ‘Okay this is cool, this is an exciting thing.’ I’ve sung it a couple times with him live and it’s a great honor,” Lzzy said.

5 Questions For Halestorm

For every backstage interview we do, we’ll ask the same five questions. Some are music related, others are just for fun. Here’s what Halestorm had to say:

What was the first album you ever bought?

“It was two cassette tapes. One was Van Halen ‘1984’ and the other was Bad Company. I remember I wanted to learn the songs,” Lzzy said.

“I was obsessed with my dad’s back catalog of vinyl records. When I first started getting into music, Led Zeppelin was one of the first bands that kind of made me want to play drums and play music,” Arejay said. “I think the first record I ever bought might have been ‘Supernatural’ by DC Talk.”

What is your most embarrassing moment on tour?

“After the drum solo, I like to yell out the city name just to get everybody pumped up to go on to the next song. The first night was in Denver so I’m like, ‘What’s up Denver!’ The second night was in Salt Lake City and what do I do? I go on the mic and I say ‘What’s up Denver!’ them I [said] “Sorry, we were there last night,’ and then I said, ‘What’s up Tokyo? What’s up Honolulu?’” Arejay said.

“We have a lot of those moments, but we say there’s nothing you can really do to embarrass us anymore. There’s a lot on YouTube that probably shouldn’t be out there.” Lzzy jokingly said. “There’s a commercial we did in a creepy guy’s basement and I was 15-years-old and it was just painful.”

What is your favorite home-cooked meal?

“I love good old Italian. My girlfriend is Italian, her entire family is severely Italian. Huge family, her grandmother can’t even speak English, she’s off-the-boat Italian, but she makes the most incredible eggplant parmesan,” Arejay said.

“I have discovered a hidden talent of mine that I didn’t know. I just got my own place and I’m starting to cook. I actually make a pretty mean sea salt crusted steak with vegetables,” Lzzy said. “I make sweet potato burritos that are pretty banging too.”

What’s your highest bowling score?

“We don’t even keep track. Probably like 3,000,” Arejay said. “Whoever doesn’t have carpal tunnel the next day wins. But, I couldn’t tell you. We’ll have to have a bowl-off.”

“We suck,” Lzzy said. “Whoever doesn’t break their finger wins.”

What’s your favorite thing to do outside of music?

“I’m a little crafty. I make jewelry out of [stuff] I that I find or broken pieces of other jewelry because you can’t give me anything nice, I end up breaking it. So, I’ll make it into something else and then wear it out for a little while and then break that,” Lzzy said.

“I’m kind of a social media junkie, but if I wasn’t in music I’d probably be in some kind of art. Whether it be some kind of acting or making movies or even on the business side of the music business,” Arejay said.

Halestorm currently has tour dates booked through the middle of November around the world, so be sure to check when they are coming to a town near you.
