Use layers

"Fall weather, especially here in Pittsburgh, can be unpredictable. Mornings can be pretty chilly, but then you might find yourself overdressed for a sunny and warm afternoon. Layering is a great way to lengthen the time you can wear your summer clothes. Throw on a tank top with a cardigan or even try layering a tank top or short-sleeve shirt over a long-sleeve or collared shirt. You can remove layers if the temperature creeps up."

Don't be shy about color

"I love fall, but it also means that winter is soon to follow. I often find myself wearing more muted colors as the temperature drops, but keeping color in your wardrobe for fall will make your outfits pop. And if you're like me, it'll help distract you from the falling temperatures. Try jewel-toned colors like deep red, royal blue and plum mixed with warm neutrals like brown or ivory. The result is an eye-catching and cozy look that is perfect for the season."

Don't underestimate the power of warm socks

"I've found that as long as my feet are warm, I'm usually pretty comfortable overall. Wool socks allow your feet to breathe, but still keep them comfortably warm. Wool doesn't need to be itchy, either. There are plenty of soft wools to choose from. Knee socks look especially cozy peaking out from tall boots. Socks can also be shown off by wearing them at knee length with a skirt and flats. Try an argyle or floral print to keep your legs warm and add flair to your outfit."

Add some accessories

"Hats, scarves and lightweight gloves are a perfect way to add a little something extra to your outfit. Fall is a great time to try these accessories out. The cooler weather means that you can add a hat or a scarf, but it won't be hidden underneath layers of winter clothing. Try a lighter scarf with a light-weight shirt to add some warmth, without feeling bundled-up. Adding these accessories means you can cut back on jewelry and the pretty autumn sunlight will act as the perfect spotlight for your outfit."

Mix and match pattern and color

"Have fun mixing patterns and colors. I'm not sure when color blocking will be considered old news, but I still love mixing bold colors in one outfit. Mixed florals and plaids look nice as long as you stick with the same color tones, for example jewel tones together and then you can mix a larger print with a smaller print in the same color tones. Adding different textures can also add dimension to an outfit. Tired of an old cardigan? Buy new buttons to give it a fresh look or add elbow patches or a bright belt to make it new and fun.
