Located south of the city in Bethel Park, Bethel Bakery makes their doughnuts fresh daily. They offer cake-style doughnuts with various toppings such as chocolate, sprinkles or glaze or filled with fruit or cream. For those who are looking for a lighter doughnut, fluffy raised doughnuts are a tasty choice. Bethel Bakery is open daily at 7 a.m., except on Sundays. Larger orders can also be placed online for a timed pickup.

Located in Pittsburgh's Strip District, Peace Love and Little Donuts is a favorite Saturday stop for Strip District Shoppers. This family-owned doughnut shop makes home-made doughnuts all day long in a variety of flavors such as blueberry, devil's food and cherry with many tasty toppings. The great part is, the doughnuts are small, so you can try several. The shop makes small doughnuts before 11 a.m. and then switches to even smaller mini doughnuts in the afternoon; perfect for an afternoon snack.

With locations in Dormont and Mt. Lebanon, Potomac Bakery is easy to get to from most of the south hills. This family-owned shop just celebrated its 85th anniversary. Potomac makes handmade doughnuts daily in glazed, sugar coated or iced cake styles. The shop also has fruit and cream-filled doughnuts as well as pretzel and coconut varieties. The Dormont location opens at 6 a.m. and the Mt. Lebanon location opens at 7 a.m. Monday-Friday. Both shops are closed on Sundays.

Located south of Pittsburgh in Washington, Krency's has been a long-time favorite for pastries in the area. Krency's features a good selection of sugar, glazed, iced and filled doughnuts. Customer favorites are cherry-topped, glazed doughnuts and light and airy French-style raised doughnuts. Dense and filling maple-iced bear claws are also a great way to start the day. Krency's has doughnuts available for most of the day, so stopping in for an afternoon coffee break is also an option.

Better-Maid Donut Company in Pittsburgh's Crafton Heights neighborhood is a well-kept secret, especially to those who sleep late. The tiny pink building located in a residential neighborhood appears to be closed much of the time. If you get there early, however, you can be treated to some tasty freshly "maid" cake-style doughnuts. This shop is closed Monday and Tuesday, but opens Wednesday-Friday at 6 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 7 a.m. Once the small shop sells out of doughnuts; however, it closes for the day and is frequently done as early as 8 a.m.
